Good To Be Bad!

“Sweep the leg… do you have a problem with that !?” Let’s face it… being good is BORING! Wouldn’t it be more fun to be a villain? Unlike the vast majority of us “good citizens” plodding through our lives confined by ordinance, bad guys care not for the conventions of decency and pretty much get to do anything that they want. “I like that !”

Do you think Darth Vader would put up with being last in line at the DMV? HELL NO… <Force Persuade> “Now calling whatever number Mr. Vader has… !” Does The Joker really care if he stayed within his calorie limit for the day? NOPE“Bring me more Skittles and M & M’s mixed together in a bowl pronto HAHAHAHA!!!” …Well, you get the idea.

Without question, The ‘Tude Dude loves villains no matter where they’re found (except for real-life of course) and really envies their freedom to do and say whatever the hell is on their minds. Obviously, one of the biggest mediums with which to find the widest array of these laughing menaces is in the world of films. I swear, most of my favorite movies are flanked by some kind of kick-ass bad guy! They have so much more fun no matter if they’re bullying protagonists or spouting some epic dialogue and can allow for some really incredible acting performances by very talented and wide-ranging thespians.

Overall, bad guys come in all shapes and sizes but my favorites seem to have some combination of imposing/cool look and/or funny/psychotic personality. Besides that though, villains are typically bursting out the seams with ‘tude which makes me feel like we have a sort of understanding with each other. Well the time has come to painstakingly figure out which ones are my favorites among the vast rogues gallery of movie villains. So, without wasting any more of the angry mob’s time, let’s get this party started !

The following is a list of The ‘Tude Dude’s 10 favorite movie villains of all time.

#10

Sebastian Shaw
featured appearance
X-Men First Class

While the original X-Men movies were just okay in my opinion, First Class impressed me greatly with stand-out acting performances from James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw. With a hypnotic voice and super suave demeanor, Sebastian Shaw steals the show and provides the X-Men with one of their toughest challenges as the leader of The Hellfire Club and by using his powers of absorption to turn their powers against them. “We are the children of the atom. Radiation gave birth to mutants. What will kill the humans will only make us stronger.”

#9

Chong Li
featured appearance
Bloodsport

With a Mr. Universe body and a soul-piercing death stare, Chong Li generally excites the crowd in Bloodsport by beating the crap out of any combatant who dares to enter the ring with him. Bolo Yeung is freakin’ awesome in this role as an unstable and very dangerous fighter who is the current Kumite champion and will stop at nothing when it comes to defending his title including causing compound fractures, cheating with blinding powder and even murdering opponents, all while smiling wildly and engaging his face in the ultimate “crazy eye stare”! “You are NEX!

#8

The Emperor/Darth Sidious/Sheev Palpatine
featured appearance
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith

The Sith are BADASS! For my whole childhood, I only knew this guy as “The Emperor” and was actually kind of amazed when I first saw him in Empire Strikes Back “Wow… Darth Vader has a boss!?” Later, it was extremely enjoyable to watch his transition from a friendly and just politician into the cruel and punishing Sith Lord Darth Sidious showcasing the acting range of Ian McDiarmid and shedding more light on one of the most mysteriously interesting characters in the whole Star Wars universe. “The time has come. Execute order 66.”

#7

Curly Bill
featured appearance
Tombstone

What a fun time turned in by Powers Boothe! There’s just something about the way Curly Bill carries himself in this movie to me. He’s got a constant smile in almost every scene that he’s in and displays the confidence of a man who entered a cheat code for “infinite health” during the Old West which is beyond enjoyable to witness. As the leader of the Cowboys in Tombstone, Curly Bill runs his crew with reckless abandon and is always ready for a fight but is also very cunning and intelligent enough to understand the importance of using fear to get what he wants. “Well… bye.”

#6

Hans Landa
featured appearance
Inglorious Basterds

Wow, what an outstanding performance by Christoph Waltz playing the charismatic and ruthless Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds. A perfect blend of charming linguist with cunning predator, Landa dons the uniform of the Nazi party as an SS Colonel but maintains a singular agenda that always ensures he’s looking out for No. 1 first. He’s so fun to watch in this movie and captivates me 100% for every second that he’s on the screen. “Ooh! That’s a bingo! Is that the way you say it?”

#5

Biff Tannen
featured appearance
Back To The Future

Is there any other character in the history of movies that makes for a more quintessential bully? Biff comes to my mind right away whenever I’m thinking about the school yard thug who’s big and mean but also dumb and can be outsmarted. Thomas F. Wilson plays the role perfectly, bringing a combination of intimidating look and funny as hell dialogue delivering some of the best lines in the whole trilogy and giving me some of my earliest memories of a great foil who I couldn’t get enough of. I think it’s safe to say that no one in the span of human history hates manure more than this guy! “What are you lookin’ at, butthead!?”

 #4

The Joker
featured appearance(s)
Batman (1989)
&
The Dark Knight

Batman has always been one of my favorite series no matter if it’s the movies or not and perhaps the biggest reason is because of his arch-nemesis – The Joker. Talk about having fun, this guy is laughing near 24/7 and constantly creating major problems for The Caped Crusader. As a kid, I watched Jack Nicholson take on the role of the iconic villain and he had me captivated with his usual carefree approach and cool as hell bravado. Later, Heath Ledger amazed me by bringing a new, more unhinged angle that seemed to make The Joker even more imposing than he had ever been before. It’s one of the first examples I have ever encountered with which I could not decide between the 2 and ever since it’s been a tie as both performances are completely different yet equally effective to me. “Oh, little song, little dance, Batman’s head on a lance.” Batman (1989) “Let’s put a smile on that face!” The Dark Knight

#3

Christopher Lee
featured appearance(s)
Dracula
&
James Bond 007: The Man With The Golden Gun
&
Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
&
The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

How do you decide between all of the malevolent baddies that this dude has portrayed over the years? He’s my first ever visualization of Dracula, who is perhaps the most recognizable villain across all landscapes of storytelling, battled James Bond as the world’s greatest assassin Francisco Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun, went turncoat on Middle-Earth and joined forces with Sauron as the evil white wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings and was a freakin’ Sith Lord in Star Wars! I can’t get enough of his emotionless demeanor and cool as hell voice and Mr. Lee will always be cemented in my eyes as one of the best and baddest movie villains of all time no matter which film it is that your watching with him in it. “I gave you the chance of aiding me willingly but you have elected the way of pain!”

#2

Terry Silver
featured appearance
The Karate Kid: Part III

Holy crap do I love this dude! For starter, The Karate Kid (the first movie in the trilogy and truly one of my favorites) already featured an over-the-top obsessed Cobra Kai sensai who would stop at nothing to achieve success for his dojo but this movie cranked up the ‘tude to max by succeeding John Kreese with another… get this… even MORE over-the-top sensai named Terry Silver! It sounds pretty dumb when it’s summed up that way and honestly I think I this movie pales to the original in every way (it’s basically the same exact plot though not done as well) however any reason that I do decide to watch Karate Kid III is because of this ridiculously fun and underrated villain who brings a psychotic dedication that’s kind of hard not to acknowledge with the upmost respect. I get that he’s good friends with John Kreese and wants to help him get revenge but this guy takes it to the next level by clearing his whole schedule (he’s like a billionaire or something so I’m sure he’s got a ton of business appointments but of course who cares… karate) to focus solely on this project of points competition manipulation and the furthering of the Cobra Kai way of martial arts. It’s completely illogical but somehow Thomas Ian Griffith pulls off one of my favorite ever movie roles by being enigmatic, hilarious and somehow completely believable in a film that probably didn’t deserve a performance this good. “Now the real pain begins, Danny-boy!”

#1

Darth Vader
featured appearance
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

It’s quite simply impossible for me to not go with the asthmatic “forcechoker” here for obvious reasons. Darth Vader has always been my favorite part of the Star Wars films and he looks and sounds amazing (James Earl Jones voice is so BADASS)! As a kid, I remember having a modest collection of action figures (Ninja TurtlesTransformersG.I. Joes, etc.) but the largest toy I owned was a 2′ tall Darth Vader figure (which I still have today – ) which dominated all the other guys no matter what battle they were in contributing to my feelings of nostalgia and respect for this all-time great bad guy to go along with how imposing he was in the films. Quite frankly, I still can’t contain just how unique and cool he is aesthetically as his visual presence is beyond striking especially when paired with the super epic voice and robot weez! There’s so much more depth to this dude though beyond his extremely intimidating cyborg samurai look and creepy breathing. Learning of his past and comprehending the conflict that rests within his soul, Darth Vader begins to materialize into 2 separate people as you discover that the man behind the suit, Anakin Skywalker, is truly imprisoned inside and cannot escape the fate that befell him when he pledged his loyalty to Chancellor Palpatine (#8 on this list) on Coruscant in an attempt to save his wife Padme’ from visions of her death during childbirth. Burdened with terrible purpose, his former master and best friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi, told Padme’ that her husband had fallen to the dark side and she agreed reluctantly to try and help talk to Anakin in an attempt to bring him back to the light. Together they met Anakin to try and reason with him but it was too late as he had already fallen in anger and felt stronger in the force than he ever had just as the Chancellor (also known as the Sith lord Darth Sidious) had predicted he would if he continued to do his bidding. After refusing to listen to their pleas, Anakin force-choked Padme’ and clashed lightsabers with his old mentor in an epic duel that would decide the fate of the galaxy! Obi-Wan was “victorious” in the fight and left Anakin disfigured where he was rescued by the Chancellor and transformed into the awesome looking and sounding creature that he’s most famous for. Even though he was given the moniker Darth Vader by Palpatine before he was in the suit, I still feel that his official stamp to that title comes after he’s in it and no other Darth personification has ever fit the part better for me. It’s this level of depth and dedication to the character that has me placing Vader at the top of my list as he’s equal parts intimidating and understandable just like the 2 completely individual personalities that formulate his being. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

Extra Honorable Mentions

John Kreese (The Karate Kid Series)

The original psychopath that instilled the “no mercy” philosophy into the Cobra KaiJohn Kreese cracks me up in most scenes that he’s in displaying an effectively unsophisticated approach to martial arts training that contrasts Mr. Miyagi’s gentle methods perfectly.

Col. Nathan R. Jessup (A Few Good Men)

One of the most fitting villain roles for the always malevolent Jack NicholsonColonel Jessup “runs his unit” through fear and intimidation while supplying A Few Good Men with the best dialogue scenes in a film chalked full of superb acting.

Shooter McGavin (Happy Gilmore)

With the ultimate jock persona and a hilariously relentless pursuit to be the world’s greatest golfer, Shooter McGavin provides tons of laughs as the foil in the mega-funny, fairway-filled comedy Happy Gilmore.

Ned Trent (The Specialist)

One of the most underrated performances that can be discovered in the world of action movies in my opinion, James Woods absolutely kills it as the fast talking/ice cold Ned Trent who will stop at nothing to get revenge on Sylvester Stallone for not agreeing to finish a demolition job after a child came into the path of destruction.

Clubber Lang (Rocky III)

Still my favorite villain from the epic Rocky series, Mr. T was a perfect choice for the volatile and hard-hitting Clubber Lang with his cool look and mega ‘tude-filled persona.
