Full-Season Playthroughs Guide
Who says stories don’t exist in sports video games? While they may not be quite like the beautifully woven tales that you’d find in a Final Fantasy-type affair, sports games offer the same kind of drama and intrigue that would typically be associated with the real thing minus the long wait in between stoppage of play to get bombarded by the same crappy ads over and over again. Thanks to the inclusion of a season or franchise mode in most sports sims, these experiences become much more visceral and engaging as YOU become the author of your very own story which unfolds as you go like a choose-your-own-adventure book with as much or little direct input as you want. Whether you want a “pure simulation” to mimic the events occurring in real life or to stack the deck for your favorite squad by any means necessary, the choice is completely yours how you want your virtual sports story to play out.
With that being said, The ‘Tude Dude would like to invite you to partake in his sports video game stories- Full-Season Playthroughs which will follow the season mode from a unique ‘tude era sports title through its entirety to tell the tale of the game being played from his perspective. Every year in sports is fraught with different hardships and challenges and the same can be said for the different sports games displayed during this time period. Will the perennial powerhouse make their way to the mountaintop or will it be an underdog team doing their best Cinderella impression? Will the starters make it through the rigors of a long season or are teams going to have dig deep down into their bench to survive? Who will lead the league in key statistical categories and who will stand apart from the rest of the pack to be named MVP?
These questions and more will be answered with each Full-Season Playthrough which will aim to tell the best story possible for the sports video game being analyzed. Obviously, the inclusion of a season mode is needed within the game for it to be eligible so sports titles that only have exhibition-type modes will be avoided. The main structure of each Full-Season Playthrough will center around 4 checkpoint blog posts at the most crucial points in a season- Beginning of the season, middle of the season, end of the season and end of the playoffs which will include relevant storylines, rankings, statistics, funny headlines, projections and whatever else incorporates itself to the game being played. All settings and rosters will be kept to their default levels with a mixture of user-controlled games played by The ‘Tude Dude and cpu-simulated contests to better reflect the unpredictable nature of the real thing.
The main idea will be an attempt at the most unbiased outcome possible however, not every season mode is the same as some let you control every team in a league (allowing you to play any games you want during the regular season schedule) while others only let you pick one team (limiting your available games to only the one team’s schedule). Additionally, other factors such as injuries, trades, stat tracking and more will be approached uniquely depending on what the game provides with the primary focus being on realism and uncertainty. These unique parameters will be explained with each Full-Season Playthrough along with any other noteworthy requisites worth mentioning. Furthermore, results from these contests will not be changed or altered meaning that any game played by The ‘Tude Dude will finish without stoppage while simulated match-ups will count towards the finalized standings regardless of the outcome.
As with any sports league, the ultimate goal for everyone competing is to reach the pinnacle by winning the championship and here is no different as each team battles for supremacy through all the different trials of a long and arduous season to limp their way to the finish line. Besides the accolades that can be garnered through team play, the single most stand-out player who made the biggest impression will receive the MVP award presented by The ‘Tude Dude at the end of the in-game year showcasing their virtual athletic prowess. Additional ideas may be instituted as we go but so far the main guidelines for Full-Season Playthroughs will be as follows
- Brief explanation of each game’s description and parameters for play.
- 4 different sections centered around the main checkpoints of a regular sports season.
- “The Story So Far…” column highlighting the biggest storylines of the season in summary form updated in each section.
Unique “Headline News” newspaper picture for each section.- Beginning of the season projections.
- Top 10 power rankings updated in each section (besides the “End Of The Playoffs” section).
- Statistics leaders for specific categories showcasing the overall results of the year listed in the “End Of The Season” section.
- Full standings showcasing the overall results of the year listed in the “End Of The Season” section.
- Full playoff results (individual game outcomes for NFL, series outcomes for MLB, NBA and NHL) upon completion posted in the “End Of The Playoffs” section.
MVP presented by The ‘Tude Dude award race updated in each section (besides the “beginning of the season” section) – awarded in the final section.
As I stated before, different concepts may be applied depending on what’s available in the game being played which will be explained within each playthrough post. Besides that, nothing else is set in stone so additional ideas will remain fluid as they come and added to the list above if they’re applicable throughout.
