About The NBA

  • First conceived in 1891 with peach baskets and a soccer-like ball by Dr. James Naismith as an indoor sport to keep athletes well-conditioned during the winter months, the game of basketball has evolved over its time as much as any other looking unrecognizable today its roots with a current mantra of beguiled individualism (thanks largely to the ‘tude era) that has effectively replaced the “old-hat” staunchness of the fundamentalists past. After its initial creation and insertion into the lexicon of athletic competition, basketball struggled to gain a foothold in the minds of the early-1900’s American sports fan evidenced by its lack of popularity in comparison to its contemporaries (baseball, football and hockey) who enjoyed a much more structured foundation thanks in large part to more established and sophisticated rules which reduced confusion to fresh eyeballs. Though this primordial period was dotted with hyperbole frustration, enough structure had been in place for several attempts at creating an established league including the ABL and the NBL however the very first building blocks that would eventuate itself into today’s NBA  were constructed by the Basketball Association of America (BAA) which was founded in 1946. Comprised mainly of northeastern ice hockey arena owners, the BAA was the first basketball league that found successful stadium promotion blasting the sport towards a new fiscal plateau. 3 years later in 1949, the BAA merged with the longer-tenured NBL officially changing its name to the NBA which has been the representative moniker ever since. Despite challenges from other upstart leagues particularly during the 1960’s and 1970’s, the main threat to the NBA’s newfound status quo as basketball’s apex came from the American Basketball Association (ABA) which rose to prominence after its inception in 1967. With an intriguing style shaped around offensive empowerment, the ABA added a much needed booster in basketball’s arm particularly with the advent of the 3 point shot that added a compelling and logical angle to the current regime’s slow-plodding style of safe play. In 1976, the NBA and ABA “merged” though absorbed would be technically more accurate. With this transaction complete, the NBA incorporated the best assets the ABA had to offer coalescing their new components perfectly while experiencing little restriction towards its status as the premiere basketball league ever since.

Position Key

  • PG Point Guard
The play-caller and tempo pusher for his team, Point Guards are primarily responsible for dribbling the ball up the court allowing for teammates to run sets against the opposition in an attempt to get an open shot
  • SG = Shooting Guard
Most often operating along the offensive perimeter, Shooting Guards are primarily scorers versed in either outside jump shots or athletic drives to the basket
  • SF = Small Forward
The most versatile position in basketball, Small Forwards occupy a similar space offensively as shooting guards while providing additional ball-handling and defensive skills
  • PF Power Forward
Patrolling the frontcourt area closer to the basket, Power Forwards generally utilize strength and position in order to secure rebounds for their team
  • C Center
Most often the biggest player in their starting unit, Centers typically work directly under the basket in order to generate high-percentage shots offensively and last-line blocks defensively
