Career recollection-

A 13x MLB All-Star, Ken Griffey Jr. was both an outstanding left-handed power hitter at the plate and an excellent defensive player in the outfield bringing a smooth style to the staunch world of baseball that won him the AL MVP in 1997. The son of a former Major Leaguer himself, “Junior” was the ultimate prodigy amassing a huge following in the sport before he took his first professional swing and eventually dominating the league with an unmatched and remarkable talent to all things on a ball field. In the video game world, Griffey brings all the same real-life attributes that make him stand out. He’s a home run threat every time he steps up to the plate in addition to being one of the fastest players in the field formulating him into one of the most fun baseball dude’s to play with in any video game EVER. Though he had already achieved phenom status in the sport both physically and digitally showing up in all the relevant retro baseball releases that carried player licenses’ during the early 90’s, his association with the always stalwart Nintendo franchise later in the decade showcased his overall marketability as a squeaky-clean legend which increased his popularity to household-name status and gave sports video game fans like me some pretty killer exclusive titles to play with despite having a noticeably absent manifest of real-life players for his SNES releases (besides Griffey himself though you can edit the other players names which is a nice touch). For me personally, I considered him the Babe Ruth of my generation as the single-most dominant ballplayer in the game making him highly-coveted on any team’s roster since the simple transaction of him coming to your franchise by himself will instantly make you a contender sparking my imagination as to what he would look like in a different uniform and what the results would be. Luckily, as soon as trading players became a more widely accessible feature for console gamers during the mid-to-late 90’s, I was able to satisfy this curiosity some as Griffey routinely wound up on different squads like the Yankees and Dodgers in venerable baseball franchises like Hardball and Triple Play Baseball as I experimented with the shiniest coin in the collection like a mad-scientist, displaying the sandbox-like fun that could be had through roster manipulation in its early years.

Notable virtual appearances-

Joe Montana Football (Sega Genesis)

NFL Sports Talk Football ’93 Starring Joe Montana (Sega Genesis)

NFL Football ’94 Starring Joe Montana (Sega Genesis)

Career recollection-

An 8x Pro Bowler and 2x NFL MVP, “Joe Cool” played his best in big games helping lead the San Francisco 49ers to their greatest ever franchise success winning 4 Super Bowl championships while also claiming the MVP award in the big game 3 times. Despite not being a highly-touted prospect coming out of Notre Dame (drafted in the 3rd round), Joe took the league by storm setting a new benchmark for quarterback success during his career as he became an unofficial “poster-boy” for the NFL (and many other shameless products) with a clean-cut demeanor and winning attitude which translated perfectly to Sega during their initial “Genesis DOES” advertising campaign. Despite his association with the Sonic brand however, Joe shined as a top-tier quarterback selection no matter what game or system he appeared on including the Tecmo Bowl series where he virtually equalizes any opponents offensive attack by himself with a right arm made of pure gold! Virtually, playing as Montana has always been fun thanks to his accurate passing arm and courtship with the great Jerry Rice which caused many awww your picking the 49ers?!” reactions from friends when partaking in football video games due to their propensity for putting up points with ease (though his days with the Chiefs were pretty fun as well). Besides Joe’s amazing throwing ability as an avatar though, some of the biggest standout memories from his “Sports Talk” games for me come from digitized in-game announcer Lon Simmons and his deader than dead-pan delivery which found its way into many Sega Sports titles afterwards and never failed to crack me up – “It’s REELY comin’ down na!” Long live Genesis Joe!

Michael Jordan: Chaos In The Windy City (SNES)

Career recollection-

Conquering all foes in his path en route to 14 All-Star appearances and 5 NBA MVP’s, “Air Jordan” combined unequaled competitiveness with superior athleticism to win 6 NBA championships during his illustrious career, taking the Finals MVP with him in every one of the 6 victories. If I seriously need to tell you any more about this guy’s real-life credentials then… Hi, welcome to Earth. The dude’s literally done it all from game-winning championship shots to pinpoint advertising which still sees him as one of the most relevant figures in the world of basketball today both physically and virtually! Despite some licensing issues which kept him out of many notable basketball releases in the 90’s (looking directly at you NBA Jam), his likeness was “recreated” on different occasions (omitting his name but usually represented by an avatar of similar appearance) as create-a-player features, still in their infancy, were seemingly expedited during this time for console releases in order for games to ensure Michael’s inclusion into their product in one way or another showcasing the public’s need for arguably the greatest to ever lace em’ up. Though his insane dunking ability was shown off admirably in the pathetically-average Jordan Vs. Bird: One On One during the ‘tude era, it wouldn’t be until NBA Live 2000 came along (and later series’ like NBA Street and NBA 2K) where he actually graced the cover a game that was truly worthy of his likeness – a somewhat disappointing virtual career for perhaps the most memorable athlete that has ever played in any sport! Not to mention… who the hell green-lit the horribly executed and laughably misguided Michael Jordan: Chaos In The Windy City anyways??? I mean, he absolutely deserves top-billing in a video game title but NOT a 2-D platformer mowing down giant spiders with basketballs! What’s next – Babe Ruth’s Bronx Bonanza where you hit baseballs at belligerent side-scrolling Red Sox fans or how about John Elway: Mile High Maelstrom where you chuck pigskins at Sasquatches while climbing to the top of Pike’s Peak? In the end, while Jordan’s real life career was super-hero worthy, his video game counterpart was lackadaisically thrust into several early titles which were beyond forgettable thanks mostly to a prepubescent market which had NO idea how to incorporate this man’s talents to their (and his) benefit. So… can we get this guy in NBA Jam now please?

Mario Lemieux

Notable virtual appearances-

Mario Lemieux Hockey (Sega Genesis)

EA’s NHL series (cross-platform)

2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge (arcade)

Career recollection-

A 10x All-Star and 3x winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy (NHL MVP), “Super Mario” combined size and speed with an unmatched skill-set to win 2 Stanley Cup championships for his Pittsburgh Penguins claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP) both times. Despite several health issues that dampened his career from ultimately reaching his desired potential of destiny, his approach to the sport as a leader and statesmen is without question “class personified” as Mario’s influence will forever be associated with the once-unknown Pittsburgh hockey franchise. In the video game world, Lemieux has always been one of my favorites to play with as he’s equally effective at scoring goals himself or setting up his teammates for a perfect pass. In addition, he’s as fast as any other player on the ice and his stick handling ability is usually rated near maximum no matter what game he’s appearing in allowing him to squeeze through defenders while maintaining control of the puck guaranteeing him real estate in the opposing team’s zone with a viable scoring chance. Plus, he has arguably the coolest nickname EVER associating himself with video games in a way that made him INSTANTLY translatable to yours truly (while also side-stepping the awful association of being forced into a crappy and unwarranted platform game… YAY). Fun fact – Mario Lemieux Hockey was my first ever ice hockey video game experience way back in the early 90’s. Needless to say, I barely even know what snow was growing up in California and I’m pretty sure I pronounced the ‘x’ in Lemieux during those days but it truly is thanks to #66 (and my next-door neighbor for owning it I guess) that I even developed an interest in hockey at a young age as I battled many times with friends in this surprisingly fun release correlating the previously-unknown-to-me legend with quality before I even knew what a hat trick was! It is slightly disappointing he doesn’t make an official appearance in his own title (containing generic teams and no-name players) but there’s no question that the seeds were effectively sown in my brain from an early age about Mario’s importance to the game of ice hockey which carried over faithfully every time I played as/against the Pittsburgh Penguins in future endeavors. Shout out to one of the most badass arcade sports game’s of all time – 2 On 2 Open Ice Challenge where Lemieux was my go-to guy!

Jack Nicklaus

Notable virtual appearances-

Jack Nicklaus’ Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf (cross-platform)

Jack Nicklaus’ Power Challenge Golf (Sega Genesis)

Jack Nicklaus Golf (SNES)

Career recollection-

A 5x PGA Player of the Year, “The Golden Bear” is widely considered one of the greatest golfers of all time thanks to his savvy ball striking and unmatched consistency which helped lead him to 18 major championships including 6 wins at the Masters Tournament. As a kid, all I knew about him was that I would constantly get his name mixed up with actor Jack Nicholson (as I’m sure many of you all did too) though this changed gradually as I learned more and more about the fascinating game of golf resonating an understanding of his legacy as arguably the greatest player ever. Of course this “should” translate to him being an alpha-dog in the golfing video game universe but unfortunately, I couldn’t control him in any of his titles as your only offered a generic character to create before playing. In fact, he only technically appears in his SNES and Sega Genesis releases (that I found at least) but even then it’s only as a computer opponent set to expert which negates any of his advantages for your use. Come on Jack! If I wanted to get my feelings hurt on a golf course I’d actually play REAL golf! By the way… LOVED ya in Batman (receives same awkward expression found on SNES box art)!!!

Orel Hershiser

Orel Hershiser’s Strike Zone (cross-platform)

R.B.I. Baseball series (cross-platform)

Hardball series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

Despite a diminutive stature that gave the false appearance of prey, “The Bulldog” brought a fiery competitiveness to his rotation worthy of a top-of-the-food-chain predator driving him to 3 All-Star appearances during his impressive career highlighted by his best season in 1988 where he won the NL Cy Young Award, The World Series and the World Series MVP cementing him as a Dodger legend (and my personal favorite pitcher) forever. Known more for his savvy approach than for being a “fireballer”, Hershiser reveled in the long-game frustrating batters with a deep repertoire of expertly-located pitches which typically resulted in his favor. Of course, this translates quite well to his gaming counterpart as he’s always equipped with a deep pitching palette to play with as well as great control of all of them including a deadly screwball which has worked exceptionally well in the Hardball series for me over the years. His early success was enough to even garner a video game bearing his very own likeness released to arcades and PC’s (no small feat especially during this time of limited develop) though I’ve never played it and cannot claim any relevant information to its merit whatsoever besides its bland screenshot offerings and obvious lack of an MLB license.  I will say, whoever wrote on the back of the box – “Take Orel Hershiser’s place on the pitcher’s mound and BLISTER that horsehide over the plate!” deserves a raise!

Emmitt Smith
NFL-Running Back

Virtual Emmitt Smith with his helmet up - Image from Emmitt Smith Football for the SNES
Notable virtual appearances-

Emmitt Smith Football (SNES)

Tecmo Bowl series (cross-platform)

Madden NFL series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

One third of the “triplets” from the Dallas Cowboys dynasty of the 90’s, Emmitt Smith teamed with a road grading offensive line to create one of the NFL’s most feared rushing attacks of all time. Combining a hard-to-tackle body with his track & field level speed, Smith rushed his way to a Hall of Fame career amassing 8 Pro Bowl appearances, 4 rushing titles, 1 NFL MVP award, and 3 Super Bowl victories with 1 Super Bowl MVP to his credit. Playing as Smith in any football video game meant that the rushing attack was going to be your best bet at gaining a victory with his fast speed and excellent blockers. As a Cowboys fan I can say that I used Emmitt A LOT virtually over the years and he never disappointed displaying a consistent greatness with his speed/power combination that routinely kept Dallas as a top-tier choice during the 90’s no matter what game he appeared in with them. He even parlayed his popularity into a title of his own released exclusively for the Super Nintendo (Emmitt Smith Football published by JVC) which I guess is like the video game equivalent of getting your own basketball shoe though the release wasn’t exactly memorable (…okay it sucks BALLS) tarnishing his digital reputation a bit. For best results, use him in a Madden title as he combines more cohesively with his phalanx-like offensive line to gash away at opposing defenses just like he did during Dallas’ greatest ever reign of glory as a franchise.

Magic Johnson
NBA-Guard

Notable virtual appearances-

Magic Johnson’s Fast Break (cross-platform)

Super Slam Dunk (SNES)

NBA Street series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

With a flashy pass-first approach and infectious smile that uplifted everyone around him, Earvin “Magic” Johnson made 12 All-Star appearances, won 3 NBA MVP awards and helped lead the “Showtime” Lakers to 5 NBA championships winning 3 Finals MVP’s along the way. As a kid, he was the very first basketball player that I ever knew and my young brain thought that he could literally cast spells or something though I wasn’t disappointed at all when I realized it was just a stupidly appropriate nickname. This, of course, translates BEAUTIFULLY to the virtual realm as the video game Magic counterpart combines great size and strength with outstanding passing ability to create one of the most fun point guards to run a basketball offense with… at least that’s what I WOULD say if I could control his likeness in either of the titles that bear his name above but alas only soulless generic avatars populate both releases warranting a befuddled look from me as to why he even endorsed these dung heaps to begin with (though you can get a nice screen of Magic’s face bobbing his mouth up and down like a ventriloquist dummy as he explains the pre-game scenario in Super Slam Dunk for the SNES)! While he was represented admirably in some other early basketball games (like the Tecmo Basketball series and EA’s Lakers Vs. Celtics And The NBA Playoffs), his best virtual representations came later in franchises’ such as NBA 2K and NBA Street where his Harlem Globetrotter-like passing and dribbling skills could be more properly displayed in high-definition as opposed to the linear simplicity of the retro times. Of course he could say that his sophisticated approach to the game was WAY beyond anything a computer could comprehend back then (which consequently isn’t entirely untrue) but whatever man – I’m not letting you off the hook for attaching your name to games that don’t even let us play as you that’s just plain wrong!

Wayne Gretzky

Notable virtual appearances-

Wayne Gretzky Hockey (cross-platform)

Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey series (cross-platform)

NHL Slapshot (Wii)

Career recollection-

Wayne Gretzky rampaged through the league in an amazing Hall of Fame career, amassing a multitude of near-impossible-to-break records along the way with a fierce approach to the game and uncanny offensive ability. As a result, “The Great One” is largely considered to be the best to ever lace up a pair of skates and piled up a huge list of achievements with 18 All-Star selections, an incredible 9 Hart Memorial Trophies (NHL MVP), 4 Stanley Cup championships, 2 Conn Smythe Trophies (playoff MVP) and some of the most daunting and distinguishable records in all of sports (like his ridiculous career point mark of 2,857 which is a Solar System apart from second place). In the video game universe (much like the real one), Gretzky is a dangerous offensive threat with his fast speed, superior passing skills, and accurate slap shot (highlighted to quality refinement in EA’s NHL series) not to mention his #99 is easily my favorite jersey number in the history of sports! Though he’s appeared as the NHL’s cover-boy for a staggering number of retro and modern-day titles ranging from semi-decent to pretty-good (guess he’s going for that record too), my personal favorite game adorned by his name is the fast-paced, “NBA Jam-style” Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey for the Nintendo 64 (and also the arcade). Developed by Williams – the unabashed KING of stand-up sports cabinets, this game provided the best arcade hockey experience that could be had at home during the early 2000’s and me and my friends would routinely slap this one in for a satisfying romp of flashing rainbow-pucks and engulfed-in-flames nets!

Notable virtual appearances-

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (NES)

Mike Tyson Boxing (cross-platform)

Fight Night Round 4 (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

With an unparalleled level of aggression and some of the deadliest ever knockout power in history, “Iron” Mike Tyson was nothing short of a boxing spectacle and someone that truly had to be seen to be believed! Winning the WBC championship at 20 years old (still a record for youngest champion), Tyson became the first ever heavyweight to unify all three belts together and his title fights were always a must see pay-per-view event in what seemed like a golden age for boxing during the ‘tude era. There are some games that allow you to play as “Iron Mike” which is fun enough I suppose with his punching power and demonstrative demeanor however Tyson’s most prominent contribution to the video game world came in the form of a HARD AS HELL NES end boss as he crushed many would-be contenders souls as the main foil in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!. For several points of a round, Tyson can knock down Little Mac with one punch which spawned many angry and frustrated Nintendo kids in addition to his hard-to-read pattern which seemed to elevate his already revered status into a legendary level. Keep at it long enough though and eventually you’ll begin to inch closer to victory as you learn his procedure through rigorous trial though the bar he sets has definitely claimed the zest of many gamers who didn’t take him seriously enough.

Notable virtual appearances-

Legends of the Diamond (NES)

World Series Baseball series (cross-platform)

MLB The Show series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

George Herman Ruth is perhaps the greatest legend in the history of Major League Baseball reaching an almost mythical status after an awe inspiring career of slamming home runs and bringing fun to as many local children as he possibly could. An impressively versatile player with a larger-than-life personality, “The Babe” actually started his career out as one of the leagues best pitchers (wait… WHAT), leading the AL in ERA in 1916 with an incredibly stingy mark of 1.75 showcasing his prowess on the mound. Combined with Boston’s other star left-handed pitching talent, Ruth helped the Red Sox become one of the first ever baseball dynasties wining 3 World Series championships during his time there. After a contract dispute with the Red Sox owner (Harry Frazee), Ruth was traded to the New York Yankees where his legend grew to titanic proportions leading the AL in home runs 12 times, winning the AL MVP in 1923, appearing in the inaugural MLB All-Star game in 1933 and helping the Bronx Bombers win 4 more World Series championships furthering his name (and their’s) into the stratosphere! Playing with “The Babe” virtually RULES and you get the sense that any pitch could end up in the next county with every swing which makes him the most anticipated hitter in any lineup (is there a call-your-own-shot button?). In addition to his super-human slugging ability, “The Sultan of Swat” is a great defensive player as well (loves those sweet diving catches in World Series Baseball) marking him as a blatant singularity who simply can’t do wrong no matter where he’s listed on a manager’s depth chart. Though I’ve chomped at the bit any time I’ve been afforded the chance to play as Ruth in the virtual realm (which is scarce to say the least), my best experiences as The King of Crash” so far have been playing MLB The Show where he lives up to his billing as a brute at the plate clobbering home runs like it’s going out of style!

Notable virtual appearances-

Tecmo Bowl series (cross-platform)

Blitz: The League series (cross-platform)

All-Pro Football 2K8 (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

With a movie star bravado and maxed out ferocity, “L.T.” burst onto the NFL and left a comet-sized crater that will never be forgotten! One of only 2 players in the history of football to win the MVP Award as a defensive player, Taylor amassed many other enviable achievements including reaching the Pro Bowl 10 times, winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year 3 times and helping rally his New York Giants to 2 Super Bowl championships. On the video game front, “L.T.’s” star status still shines brightly as a pass rushing demon known for being the only foil (and equally Superman-like counterpart) to Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl.

Larry Bird

Notable virtual appearances-

Jordan Vs. Bird: One On One (cross-platform)

NBA 2K series (cross-platform)

Tecmo NBA Basketball series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

One of the greatest shooters and clutch players of all time, Larry Bird also combined a relentless work ethic with a genius basketball i.q. to help guide the Boston Celtics to 3 NBA championships winning 2 NBA Finals MVP’s along the way. In addition to those great accomplishments, “Larry Legend” also was a 12x All-Star and a 3x NBA MVP and his #33 jersey hangs prominently from the rafters of Boston Garden among a cavalcade of great legends that played for the Celtics. My favorite aspect of playing as Larry Bird in the video game realm is his shooting ability combined with his great size making him a deadly scoring threat no matter who was defending him or where he was on the court. Perfect for beginning players trying to learn how to play a basketball video game.

Patrick Roy
NHL-Goaltender

Notable virtual appearances-

EA’s NHL series (cross-platform)

NHL FaceOff series (PlayStation)

NHL 2K series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

One of the most competitive and intimidating goalies that the NHL has ever seen stand between the pipes, Patrick Roy brought a foreboding presence to the goaltender position that both galvanized his teammates and struck fear in the opposition. A 6x All-Star, 4x Stanley Cup champion, and 3x Conn Smythe Trophy winner, “Saint Patrick” piled up his trophy room, in an outstanding Hall of Fame career, winning also the William M. Jennings Trophy 5 times (starting goaltender for the team with the fewest goals scored against it), and the Vezina Trophy 3 times (goaltender judged by the league to be the best at his position) all of these great achievements showcasing both amazing team and individual accolades. In gaming, Roy has rated either as among the top or the undisputed best goalie in whichever game he’s in throughout the years providing perhaps the most consistent hockey game netminder to date. While I don’t usually control the goaltender when I’m playing a hockey video game (I tend to stick to the skaters unless it’s a shootout), jumping into battle with either Montreal or Colorado over the seasons has allowed your offenses to be more aggressive with the comforting knowledge of having the closest thing to a brick wall standing in front of your net.

Jeremy McGrath Supercross 98 (PlayStation)

Jeremy McGrath Supercross World (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

Riding with style and winning multiple Supercross championships best describe Jeremy McGrath during his great MX career. Starting out as a BMX racer, McGrath brought an aggressive approach to the world of Motocross that saw him not only reach the zenith of the racing aspect of the sport but also helped birth the world of freestyle with his cool tricks that he would perform in race. After a decade of dominance in the 90’s, winning 7 Supercross championships, McGrath earned the moniker “King of Supercross” chiseling his name into the stone slab of Motocross history forever. Playing as McGrath is the obvious choice in any of his games. He’s generally top rated across the board which makes him the safest and most logical racer to go with. In fact, the only time I can remember not being Jeremy is if I was playing with friends and someone else picked him leaving me with having to choose another rider which was typically uncharted territory.

Roger Clemens

Career recollection-

With a devastating fastball and bullish attitude, Roger Clemens stormed through an illustrious career piling up numerous great achievements along the way. An 11x All-Star and 2x World Series champion, “The Rocket” has also won a record-setting 7 Cy Young Awards in his career adding one AL MVP which is very prestigious for a pitcher to win. Roger Clemens is easily one of best pitchers to play with in the world of video games with his simple-to-use formula of fastballs and curveballs. As one of the top rated hurlers in whatever game he’s appeared in, Clemens excels by overpowering the opponents with aggressively hard pitches that mow down opposing lineups.

Notable virtual appearances-

NFL Quarterback Club series (cross-platform)

NFL Blitz series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

With a cannon for an arm and a kids joy for the game, Brett Favre burst onto the scene and provided the NFL with one of the most unforgettable quarterback careers ever seen. While he holds many impressive records and accolades including being an 11x Pro Bowler, 3x NFL MVP, and winner of Super Bowl XXXI, perhaps the most impressive record held by Favre is his “ironman” streak of 297 consecutive games started (321 including the playoffs) which is an unheard of mark in a game of snarling defensive players whose main purpose is to hurt all opposing quarterbacks. Favre’s bazooka arm transfers over to the video game universe nicely as his passing strength is usually at the top of the league while also being plenty accurate  as well. No matter what team he’s playing on, Favre’s got plenty of offensive weapons to play with giving the user a good chance to win no matter if your “Hailing Mary” against the computer or opposing players.

Shaq Fu (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

Slam dunking with a power and authority that has never been seen at anytime in basketball’s history, Shaquille O’Neal was without question the most dominant force that has ever played in the NBA. “Shaq” won everything in his illustrious career including being a 15x All-Star, 1x NBA MVP, 4x NBA champion, and 3x NBA Finals MVP and he brought a fun loving personality that somehow added even more spectacle to the Goliath-sized giant of a man who tore entire rims down to the floor. In the gaming world, Shaq is perfect for inside-out basketball as he’s totally overpowering against any 1 opponent and can take advantage of double teams well with his good passing.

Notable virtual appearances-

EA’s NHL series (cross-platform)

NHL Hitz series (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

One of the baddest and most intimidating body checkers in the history of the game, Scott Stevens protected his blue line like a raging behemoth and was never shy about putting his entire body into yours to clear you from the puck. A 13x All-Star, Stevens enjoyed his most success with the New Jersey Devils where he won 3 Stanley Cup championships and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2000. If plowing into opponents at high speeds sounds like fun to you, than look no further than Mr. Stevens who constantly has high ratings in body checking and defensive awareness in any game that I have played with him in. He loves to fight too and I feel confident that he can win any scuffle he gets in no matter the opponent.

Career recollection-

One of the most innovative and high-flying pro skaters of all time, Tony Hawk’s laundry list is beyond extensive in the world of skateboarding- pioneering new tricks, placing 1st in numerous events and becoming the “face” of a world that had previously been inaccessible to the masses. Known for his prowess in the half-pipe, “The Birdman” flies as high as anyone on the ramp and can perform a wide array of tricks that will drop your jaw in excitement. His gaming contribution is incomparable to any other pro skater with his very own awesome line of video games starting with the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. Playing as Tony has always been choice for vert skating as he’s got high marks in all the air and hang time columns and he spins as fast as anyone else as well giving you ample ability to pull off some of those wicked tricks while twisting your body which increases your combo meter for more points.

Career recollection-

Combining power and strength with supreme consistency, Frank Thomas became one of the greatest hitters in Major League Baseball history in addition to being a top-shelf leader and locker room presence. Near or at the top of the league in batting average every season he played, “The Big Hurt” added many illustrious achievements throughout his Hall of Fame career being a 5x All-Star, winning the AL MVP award 2 times and garnering an envious .301 career batting average. Thomas is one of my personal favorite video game baseball players to control with his big plate presence, home-run power and contact swing. He’s one of the few big strong guys in baseball that actually plays a more controlled game of “get on base” as opposed to “let’s crush everything out of the park” which actually raises my patience at the plate whenever I’m hitting with him.

The unquestioned king atop the wide receiver mountain, Jerry Rice carried himself with class apart and claimed the greatest ever career not only for his position but perhaps the entire NFL. His career highlights are above reproach already being a 13x Pro Bowler, 2x NFL Offensive Player of the Year, 3x Super Bowl champion, and 1x Super Bowl MVP but add to that his incredible list of very hard to break records such as 1,549 career receptions, 22,895 career receiving yards and 197 career touchdown receptions and you have one of the most impressive sections in the entire NFL Hall of Fame. Rice’s hands are glue in the video game world as he catches nearly everything thrown his way. With his route running also being top-notch, Rice is a sure thing to be exactly where you need him to make the catch that’s needed in a tough game.

Career recollection-

Coming into the NBA with as much hype as any professional athlete across the spectrum of sports, LeBron James didn’t just live up to it… he SMASHED it with his freakish athletic ability and unselfish playing style not to mention he’s still not done yet (as of 2018). Arguably the greatest to ever lace em’ up, “The King” is basically what you would get if you could engineer the perfect NBA player in a laboratory combining speed, strength, intelligence, point guard ability like Magic, high flying dunks like Jordan, etc. He’s already established a Hall of Fame resume with 14 All-Star appearances, 4 MVP awards, 3 NBA championships, and 3 NBA Finals MVP’s but he’s remarkably not done yet and still adding to his royal legacy. LeBron feels like a cheat code when playing with him in any video game as he can play “NBA Jam” style no matter who’s guarding him. Obviously, he’s great at passing and also a proficient shooter and rebounder but his driving ability in the lane is my favorite so far of any player in a basketball game to date as he’s simply too fast for bigger defenders and can blow right past them and too strong for smaller guys and can dunk right over them making him a literal “perfect storm” capable of penetrating anything in his path!

Career recollection-

One of the deadliest snipers in NHL history, Brett Hull plowed through a fantastic career being one of the greatest goal scorers ever and a fun loving guy to boot. Carrying himself with a kids passion for the game, “The Golden Brett” piled up his NHL accomplishments with 8 All-Star appearances, 1 Hart Memorial Trophy, and 2 Stanley Cup championships to go along with an amazing 741 career goals scored. Brett plays a super fun “grip it and rip it” style in the video game world with his hard and accurate slapshot. While he’s not the fastest skater on the ice, Hull’s as reliable as any other winger in the NHL and a perfect guy to dish it off to for a good passing centerman.

Career recollection-

One of the best tennis player in history, Andre Agassi dominated his era with 8 Grand Slam championships, 7 runner-up finishes, and a gold medal in the ’96 Olympics. He also is one of 8 players in history to win the career Grand Slam (winning at least one of the four Grand Slam tournaments) as well as being one of only 2 players in history to have a career Grand Slam with a golden medal. Accuracy and control are the staples to Andre’s game and it translates into the video game world. He’s a perfect player to play as if you want to pick up the basics but also a great challenge if you want to test your skills against one of the best.

Career recollection-

Spanning a major league record 27 seasons, Nolan Ryan’s career was nothing short of astonishing as he struck out batter after batter and maintained a high velocity with his throws deep into his 40’s. An 8x All-Star and 1x World Series champion, Ryan also holds two of the most prestigious pitching records in Major League Baseball history which showcases his longevity and effectiveness- #1 all time strikeout leader with 5,714 and most no-hitters in history with 7. In gaming, Nolan Ryan can be simple in strategy but effective in execution as his pitches are thrown hard, fast and straight. Truly the best type of hurler to start out with if you have never played a baseball game from the late 80’s to mid 90’s era.

Prime Time NFL Football Starring Deion Sanders (Sega Genesis)

Career recollection-

One of the flashiest and most entertaining athletes in the history of sports, the uber talented Deion Sanders made his mark in both the MLB and the NFL with his hype-supreme personality and track-star speed though he was more known for his football career overall. Setting the bar as the ultimate cover corner, “Prime Time” dazzled the league running stride for stride and covering all of the NFL’s best wide receivers like a blanket while also utilizing his awesome athletic gifts on offense and special teams as well. His football career saw many impressive achievements including reaching the Pro Bowl 8 times, claiming the 1994 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and winning back-to-back Super Bowls (XXIX & XXX). In video games, “Neon Deion” is so much fun to play with as his speed is always near the top which makes him run circles around his opponents. No receiver is fast enough to break away from him and he’s always getting a hand in on passes but can also be a hellish punt returner in addition to being a big-play threat wide receiver himself.

Career recollection-

One of the most talented and mercurial players to ever play in the NBA, Charles Barkley was impossible to ignore throughout his playing career with his overpowered rebounding, rim-rattling dunks and unique personality. “Sir Charles” was never too shy to share his opinions in any matter and his NBA accolades include 11 All-Star appearances and 1 MVP award while his #34 jersey has his been retired by his college team (Auburn) in addition to his two most prominent NBA stops (Philadelphia and Phoenix). “The Round Mound of Rebound” is definitely a guy you want on your team in the video game world as he’s as strong as anyone down in the paint while also playing above the rim. He’s a talented shooter as well and can hit most open shots which makes him extremely versatile and fun to play with.

Career recollection-

With a rock star ego and one of the best ever knacks for finding the back of the net, Alexander Ovechkin has blazed an impressive trail throughout his career which is still being added to as of this writing. Quite possibly the most gifted overall player that has ever played in the NHL, “Alexander the Great” combines high-end speed, bone-jarring checks and sensational slapshot ability to constantly keep the pressure on any of his opponents. Fresh off of his first ever Stanley Cup championship and Conn Smythe Trophy this year (2018), “The Great Eight” will continue to add to an already impressive legacy that includes 9 All-Star appearances, 7 “Rocket” Richard Awards (season goal leader), and 3 Hart Memorial Trophy’s. How could you not want to play with Ovechkin in any hockey video game? He’s big, fast and has a laser-like slapshot which makes scoring goals a breeze. “Ovi” also checks with the best of them and is never afraid to plow into an opposing teams star player to separate him from the puck.

Career recollection-

Racing with a purpose and winning at every stage of his long and illustrious career, Jeff Gordon accomplished all there was to achieve in the world of NASCAR and set many high bars along the way. “The Rainbow Warrior” battled everyone throughout his years and is third all time in both career wins (93) and pole positions (81), holds 4 Winston Cup Series championships and raced in an impressive #1 all time 797 consecutive races from 1990 to 2015. I cannot lie and must confess that I have next to zero experience with any NASCAR racing game. Hard to imagine the racers truly having too different of stats as there just controlling the cars anyways so maybe the a.i. is programmed better for the more-well-known stars of NASCAR to better differentiate them from the pack… or maybe we’re just to enjoy all the different pretty decal arrangements of each race car?

Career recollection-

Without question the greatest ever 2-sport athlete in history, Bo Jackson was a home-run hitting and wall-running defensive dynamo in the outfield as a baseball player and a supremely agile and lethally powerful running back as a football player who DEFINITELY would have been a Hall of Fame recipient in both leagues had he not been hampered by injury and robbed of both of his great careers too soon. Coming and going in a flash like a bolt of lightning, “Bo” still set his mark on the world during his short tenure and all that got to watch him were in awe of the spectacle of this freakish Heisman Trophy winner who would go on to become an All-Star in both the MLB and the NFL. Bo Jackson is a legendary figure amongst professional athletes in video games due mainly to his daunting presence in the ever-popular Tecmo Bowl for the NES. “Tecmo Bo” can literally run circles around defenders and is without question the most dominant overall offensive player in the entire game which raised his status among casual sports fans and non-sports fans alike.

Career recollection-

With a perfect command on his throw and a cardiovascular system made up of liquid nitrogen, Tom Brady controls the game like a marionette and is arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of professional football. Already buried under a pile of great NFL achievements such as being a 13x Pro Bowler, 2x NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and 3x NFL MVP, “Tom Terrific’s” true legacy is being an unbridled and relentless winner and it’s evidenced by his tremendous 5 Super Bowl championships and 4 Super Bowl MVP’s and once more… as of 2018 he’s remarkably still adding to this already unrivaled showcase of greatness. In the realm of video games, Brady feels wonderful whenever throwing the ball as his accuracy is usually perfect/near perfect which makes the passing game a lethal part of your offense whenever playing as the Patriots. Throughout the years, Tom’s had many different fun weapons that have come and gone such as Randy Moss and Rob Gronkowski but he’s been the one constant that has always made New England a threat and its been amazing how great they’ve been (both in real life and video games) over this run with so many different offensive players coming and going during his reign.

Career recollection-

With the heart of a lion and one of the nastiest cross-over dribbles in the history of basketball, Allen Iverson was a dominant offensive player throughout his career despite his diminutive stature and was arguably pound-for-pound one of the toughest players to ever play in the NBA. An 11x All-Star and NBA MVP in 2001, “The Answer” was an unstoppable offensive machine winning the NBA scoring title 4 times in his career with his blazing fast speed, accurate off-dribble jump shot and other-worldly handles. These traits translate nicely to his video game counterpart as “A.I.” is simply one of the fastest and most fun players you’ll ever play with in a basketball game. His speed is unmatched and he can make a lot of contested shots which is impressive but by far my favorite attribute is his ball handling which always made me feel like I was controlling a Harlem Globetrotter no matter who was trying to guard me as Iverson can cross up anyone with his magician-like dribbling and get off his shot anywhere on the court.

Career recollection-

One of the greatest captains and leaders in professional sports history, Steve Yzerman played with a class and grace befitting the top-tier Detroit Red Wings franchise and his name will forever remain among the platoon of legends that donned the iconic red & white jersey in “hockeytown”. A 10x All-Star, 3x Stanley Cup champion, and Conn Smythe winner in 1998, “Stevie Y” was the most reliable fixture for Detroit during a remarkably impressive dynastic run in the 90’s with his great leadership, pinpoint passing and accurate wrist-shot. Yzerman’s consistency can be found in video games as well as he’s always a high-rating player with good skating and passing ability. If you’ve partook in any hockey game in the 90’s, then chances are you’ve either played as or against the top-of-the-food-chain Red Wings and their juggernaut-like roster led by #19.

Career recollection-

With a larger-than-life persona and a kick that defies physics, David Beckham transcended the world of football/soccer at every stage of his career and cemented his name into the sports long-tenured legacy. Playing for some of the greatest clubs in Europe throughout his tenure such as Manchester United and Real Madrid before making his mark in the U.S., “Becks” was a winner no matter who he played for with his excellent ball-control and wicked curve that he could put on his kicks and he amassed an impressive 19 major trophies during his 20-year career. In the brief time that I have used Beckham in the world of video games, I can acknowledge that these traits make their way to the virtual realm quite well as David is a pure goal-scoring maestro with his nice speed and unique kicking ability.

Career recollection-

One of the tallest and most dominant power pitchers in the history of the game, Randy Johnson executed strikeouts on batters like soldiers lining up for a firing squad thanks to his devastating fastball and pulling slider while at the same time carrying himself with class throughout his long-tenured and highly productive career. Combining maximum power on his pitches with a coveted left-handed throwing arm, “The Big Unit” enjoyed a prosperous career piling up superstar stats such as being a 10x All-Star, 5x Cy Young Award winner, and also winning the World Series in 2001 claiming a share of the World Series MVP that year with fellow pitching ace Curt Schilling. In addition, Johnson currently ranks 2nd on the all time strikeout list with 4,875 and has also thrown a no-hitter in both leagues which has only been done by 4 other pitchers in the history of baseball. Controlling Johnson in video games is extremely advantageous to the player thanks to his high velocity fastball and left-handed ability which gives an edge against opposing batters especially right-handed ones. If you like fastballs and power sliders, Randy’s your guy and he makes up for a small repertoire of pitch types by being extremely effective at what he does throw.

Notable virtual appearances-

Career recollection-

The man with perhaps the most extensive library of highlight reel plays seen in the NFL, Barry Sanders was an absolute stud at the running back position and possessed agility and elusiveness unlike anything that’s ever been seen in the game of football. A 10x Pro Bowler, 2x NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFL MVP in 1997, Barry Sanders belied logic and physics with his insane cutbacks and juke moves capable of shaking defenders of all varieties out of their gourd on his trek to help guide his Lions to the end zone. In video games, Barry Sanders translates to being the most athletically gifted running back that I have ever used (other than the ridiculously overpowered Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl) and is always a threat to defenses with his superb ratings in speed and agility.

Notable virtual appearances-

Career recollection-

Perhaps the most relentless superstar that has ever played in the NBA, Kobe Bryant approached the game like a soldier entering battle and combined a gifted athletic prowess with a superior mental acuity to nurture a prosperous career as one of the greatest ever basketball players to play the game. An 18x All-Star, 2x scoring champ, and NBA MVP in 2008, “The Black Mamba’s” driving force in the NBA was winning evidenced by his 5 NBA championships and 2 NBA Finals MVP’s which showcased his tireless desire to be the best during his career. In gaming, Kobe has always been really fun to play with as his slashing ability combined with an indefensible fadeaway jumper make for a top-flight offensive ace who can get you points from virtually anywhere on the court. In fact, much like his real-life counterpart, Kobe plays like a clone of Michael Jordan and brings an extremely similar style and approach that always sees him find a way to get off his shot no matter who’s standing between him and the basket.

With 13 All-Star appearances, 2 Stanley Cup championships, 1 Hart Memorial Trophy and 1 Conn Smythe Trophy on his resume, Sakic’s numbers are Hall of Fame worthy alone but actually don’t give enough credit to the excellent leadership qualities that permeated his game. Playing as Sakic in any hockey game has always been a pleasure as he combines pure skating, crisp passing and a snappy wrist-shot to help carry his team to victory.

Tiger Woods

Notable virtual appearances-

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf series (cross-platform)

CyberTiger (cross-platform)

Career recollection-

The best golfer of his generation and already among the greatest of all time, Tiger Woods combines super-powered drives with uncanny putting to dominate the competition on all fronts. With staggering career records such as being named PGA Player of the Year an unbelievable 11 times and winning the money list in 10 different seasons, Woods has already achieved royalty status in the game of golf and will look to add to his jaw-dropping 14 major championships including 4 wins at the Masters Tournament. If you’ve played any golf game sometime during the 2000’s, then chances are it was one of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games from EA Sports which starred (of course) Tiger Woods. Without question, he is the obvious player to choose as he always has high ratings in driving power and putting ability. Additionally, he’s a solid recovery player and hits the ball well from tough surfaces which aids the player towards those lower stroke totals.
